Do I harvest the whole plant, or in segments?

I've heard of people harvesting plants section by section, starting with some areas while letting others grow to prime harvesting conditions. My plan was to chop the upper half of the plant off and harvest that while letting the rest of the bottom mature further and let it grow some more in. Will this work? If not, what's the best way to harvest in sections?

It would be cool if you could let the lower buds mature for another couple days to a week. But, chopping off the top half of the plant would probably be too traumatic for the plant to survive. Unless you take great care when harvesting.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has tried this.

I cut off the cola...(5% amber).. and let the rest of the plant go another 2 weeks. It was a waste of my time; no more growth, no more amber trichs......I only did it because I had seeds cooking in the lower popcorn buds..
