Hyrdoton mixed with soil? Im not sure how that would work! Hydroton is generally a hydroponic medium, not to be used with soil.
If its been under a 400 all its life Im sure that shop light would seem puuuuuuuny. Youll def need more light than what you have now. If you have it under 80 watts of shop light.. Im assuming its a 4 ft wide fixture, and then youre only looking at 20 w a square foot, and the general minimum is 50w. And thats the newbie way to figure it. Bump it up another 3 fixtures and youll be doing alright, make sure the light is within a couple inches from the plant top. Or invest in some CFLs and fixtures. Look at the lighting forum to figure out what would work best with your financial situation right now.

dude if you want to go cheap on lighting then get yourself to homedepo and get your self one of them stand lights as so ( 1200 Watt Oval Twin Head Halogen Worklight - L-5302HD at The Home Depot ) they have some that are 1100watts to 1400 watts and they work great for the time being like said before get the lighting then work on the air circulation

you got some pics to back up this advice?

halogen lights are worthless for growing. they don't put out much light and produce a bunch of heat. it might keep the plant alive with minimal growth. that joke cost $55! wtf? do you know how many CFLs with the hardware to mount them you can get for $55?

you can get a 4 or 5 light vanity bar, the Y splitters to match and the eight to 10 bulbs you need for around that price (give or take depending on what you actually find at the store).

395, did you pre-soak the hydroton? it's probably not a good idea to mix it with your soil. hydrton is notorious for having pH problems. you might want to consider something different. you can mix in 2/3 potting soil with 1/3 perlite if you need to improve aeration and drainage.

like LOC said, pH is paramount. get a way to test it. you can get a freshwater aquarium kit for ~$6, or a digital pH pen for ~$25.

    good growing!

as previously stated they are side lighting and yes they do put out some heat and they do put out plenty of lighting for the purpose that they are serving as yes i will get pics or video of my room to show you or anyone and no there not being used yet because my plants are only in the second week of vegitation. cfls here range here from 10 to 15 each so mabye much cheaper there. those lights are better than you think but i guess it depends on the persons opinion ive never grown a plant with them alone i've always used a metal halide to grow and just started using the halogen two years ago and they havent failed me yet but as i stated before its not advise just my opinion and i will get some pics up soon. (im not here to debate subjects nor to give advise just opinions)

That sounds a lot like advice, and not an opinion to me. Like Shake said, you halogens may be working fine how you are using them, but they are about the most inefficient use of power because most of the energy dissipated is in the form of heat rather than light.

1200w metal halide? Is that 2 600s or one light?
