It really does depends on your own personal situation.
I have lived at my apartment for over a year, maintenance has stopped by once. I used to have a dog so I had a webcam setup to see what it was up to, all maintenance did when they came by was change the air filter (I did receive 24 hour notice).
I'm pretty sure all apartments will call the police if they think you are growing. You have to factor in whether or not you have a license or if it's worth the trip to jail, possible loss of job, loss of apartment, etc..

Also, the smell is not bad if I close the closet, problem is, I never remember to.
