Not to belabor a point, but I was there, during the 60's. It was a fun time to be alive. If I've got my facts straight, Hippie derived from Hipster, which was a kind of label for reefer smoking, jazz loving, artistic beatnick types of the 50's and early 60's. Abbie Hoffman tried to capitalize on the word by, according to himself, starting up the Youth International Party, or Yippies. Hippie was basically an insulting term picked up by the media and used to describe the counter culture scene, as if one label could be slapped on everybody who wasn't at all like Mr. & Mrs. Leave it to Beaver. A sort of rennaisance was happening, and I don't recall anyone who voluntarily called himself/herself a hippie, because, of course, we were all so individualistic, and knew that labels were a tool of the evil Military/Industrial Complex Conspiracy . At the risk of drawing fire, the only ones who were comfortable being called hippies, as I recall, were losers who would have been happy to be included in any recognizable category, as they weren't very good at having identities of their own.

Ha, my dad says he used to beat up hippies when he was my age. As much as i disagree with what he did the inner tough guy who thinks being totally passive is just total bull shit has to laugh at the thought of it.

Loud and clear, Orange. I forget sometimes how much violence the non-violent types used to start. They'd shout these annoyingly trite slogans at you; you knew they didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Almost like they were trying to pick a fight, but of course, they'd always say that violence didn't solve anything, once they got you mad enough to knock their block off. The worst were the middle class anti-war punks who hadn't been anywhere beyond their high school parking lot. You'd get this "Kill any babies lately?" kind of insult, and want to escort them to the nearest fire zone to see how profound they felt after being exposed to the real world.

I never beat up any hippies, but would have knocked the stuffings out of anyone who called me one. They did give us a bad reputation. Just another stereotype for the media to make fun of.
