snapped stem
the xylem and the phloem are in the stem. it's the plants food supply system basically. it's how nutrients and sugars are moved around.
tape won't keep an infection out, although it might help a bit. as long as it's supported well, and the stem is together it should heal up fine, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
