Which variety for first timer? (Afghan Kush?)

    Hi Guys!!

I'm doing a bit of research into which variety would be best to suit my first grow and was wondering which variety you guys would recommend?

    My grow room dimensions are 70cm x 70cm x 120cm (28in x 28in x 3ft)
(Although I can go higher 5ft max height of grow room)

    I will be using 4 x 30watt cfls (equivelant to 4 x 150watts) (600watt total)
    (WILL THIS BE ENOUGH WATTAGE???)

My method of growing will be store bought compost and 50-50 perlite mix

I plan on growing 4 plants in SOG method staggering them so I harvest every 2 weeks by giving the plants only 2 weeks vegatative growth before flowering.

My plant requirements are as follows:

    1. The variety has to be EASY to grow for a first timer

    2. Short in height because of my limited grow space (Im thinking mostly an Indica strain?)

    3. not too expensive! and preferably able to be bought feminized!

    4. And finally an average yield! (I would be happy with approx 2oz+ per plant!....Is this ambitious given only 2 weeks of growth before fowering?)

I was thinking Afghan Kush! What do you guys think?

Cant wait to hear all you guys ideas, information and feedback!!

    Peace

How many times are you going to post the same questions? Once is usually enough.

    Hey Rusty,

Thanks for your advice on that other post man....

I thought If I posted on a couple of categories I would have increased odds of somebody giving me some sound advice...

I'm baked, I was going to answer based on reading the topic title, "Which variety for first timer?"

You can't go wrong with the intermatic t-101.

Great first timer, and you can grow into it. If using 240 volt make sure to get at least a t-104 since it's a 2-pole timer. Leaving one of the hot lines energized puts undue stress on the ballast.

But I guess you asked something different.

What you grow is a personal choice. Obviously pick an indoor strain.

I'd avoid pure sativas as they take longer and often take longer to grow.

Perhaps Early-Girl or some other fast flowering hybrid, that way you can learn and fine tune your technique with less time between grow cycles.

As far lights are concerned, ignore claims of equivalent power. That's compared to incandescent, and means nothing in this context.

What you have is 120 Watts total, only enough for a very tiny, likely under 2 oz grow.

Yield based on your light and skill mostly, ounces per plant means little, because you can have one big plant or a bunch of tiny ones.

Weather or not you add light, make that the area has decent ventilation.

Thanks for your input guys! Its much appreciated!

I'm still in the planning stages at the minute, I'm reading up and learning as much as I can..... I want to get everything ready to start in the next month or so...

I'm thinking Afghan Kush feminized for my first variety as It is supposed to yield quite well and be reasonably easy to cultivate for a beginner (high tolerance to over fertilization & watering) and is mostly indica so will stay very short for my indoor space...

I think I'm gonna stick with CFLs...although the light doesnt penetrate as well as HPS...I can play around with different numbers and wattages until I get the correct balance of light and temperature in my grow room....and then whilst growing keep them very...very close to the plants as possible....

Just learning about PH at the minute! (taking rusty's sound advice)

Although I'm swaying a bit on making a decision on which potting mix to use...

I was thinking of using a seed potting compost to start the seedlings and then transfer into canna terra professional soil mix...veg for 2 weeks then start nutes (canna flores) after the first week of 12/12 changeover.....

Doest this sound like a reasonable plan? Any vets out there? your help is more than welcome and much appreciated!!

    I don't really like soil, but I use a nice soil-like substrate.

1/2 Sphagnum Peat Moss (I don't know where you might be able to find peat moss in Scotland Ooh, I could use a nice glass of single-malt highland whiskey right now, something with a speyside fruitiness)

    1/2 Pearlite

A good fistfull of dolemetic lime. (It has a neutral PH and helps buffer the PH)
Worm castings or compost can be added to give it nutrients at seedling levels, since it won't have the built-in nutrients of soil.

    No chemical ferts for seedlings!!!

This mix makes it hard to over-water, roots love it, and I never get bugs in it like I did when I was using potting soil. Saving money on diatomaceous earth.

    Thanks mustelid!

aye, I'm sure it will be hard to find peat moss in scotland haha!

I've been looking into using the canna coco substrate (Ph balanced and no nutes) mixing perlite and dolomite lime and then nuting with canna a+b as and when required....

either that or the canna terra soil mix...hmmm? decisions? decisions?

I wanna get it right the first time round.... If a jobs worth doing its worth doing right.....
Do you think I'd maybe be better off with the canna substrate?.... this website Home | CANNA UK has all the info
