Hps's are flood lights, thats what they are ment for.As for the orange light spectrem that the colour they give off, anyway this is fine for growing under it will give you a busy plant if kept close to the tops of the plants.most people would say that they are better for budding then for veg grow but i use mine for both and have had great results.

I don't veg for a particular time. I go by heighth. Each strain has it's own heighth potential so you will have to experiment some. I like to turn my over to flowering generally speaking at about 12". They still grow 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 ft depending on a few factors. Shorter plants use light more efficiently. Having your light too far away is a common mistake. It causes plants to 'reach' for the light, making them leggy. Get them as close as your ventilation and light size will allow. Obviously, bigger lights put out more heat and need to be farther away. You could alway try light movers or air cooled hoods. I keep my 400w MH at about 10-12" away.
To also answer gaz2020, flowers start appearing about 1-2 weeks after switching to 12/12 schedule. Male flowers usually start appearing first, so if you started from seed, Save the women and make babies, Kill the guys.

bigbudsmoker2k4 apparently does not have a halogen, but rather an HPS (High Pressure Sodium). Halogens suck!

well, if you go with HID light your parents may wonder why there electric bill has gone up lately, im not goin to help you, cause you seem ignorant. And if you ever get caught your parents will sit in jail for a long time. Dont grow at your parents house, get you own place. Im out.

Lit up is right -you should have the freedom to do what you want but nobody should take unknowing and unwilling people with them especially your parents!!!You not only open up the possibility of arrest but also asset forfieture.Everything they worked for could be gone in a puff of poorly grown smoke.
