first of all the question was tip top as in FIM or 3 inches down from top how easy was that

You still haven't said what you hope to achieve by topping. If you want a multi topped plant - FIM, if you want two tops - take the top node out cleanly... can't see a reason to take of 3 inches off the top unless you want to top and clone in one go.
