When Pot was truly Pot, and now it's not !

Ok, after a twenty year plus absence of smoke (we used to call it) and now back on the scene, Why the hell does all the various name calling and overhype make it appear that 90% or more of what people are growing or smoking is pretty much all the same stuff. Yes I've been properly intraduced to various forms of the new bud genomes, and smoked a few buds of unknown orgin. Truth be told though, not impressed with any of it. Even the Kush, or Haze, Rhino etc...blah,blah,blah. Absolutly, no different then any of the smoke we toked back in the seventies. In fact I'd say it gone down hill a bit since. The names, lets face it, are "meaningless". Report after report, science, legend, and bullshit pretty much confirms what seems to be a great mind play. Positive thinking does have it disciples. As I am a Jesus freak myself, I think I'd I'd say good for you. I mean hey if you want to believe it's great and it truly works for you, may the force be with you in you indivers. But for those of us who I'd like to believe we have our feet on a little more solid ground, how about a little more practicality on our part and some honesty from the others. Of course in his name, and at this time I know, the hammer has hit the nail. Bitch all you like, but those of you with some wizdom, will you take a moment to reflect. Let's see if I'm man enough to admit if'n I've made a mistake here. Or if money, and bullshit has suceeded ?

I started in the 60's and I'd say the potency has definitely increased. But your right about the strains. everybody and there brother supposedly comes up with a new strain. Very little difference between any of them. It still just breaks down to indica dominant or sativa dominant. Some look a little prettier than others but thats about it.

id say there is MORE potent pot now then there was in the 70's. 'More potent' meaning
    A) higher thc content
    B) just plain MORE dank nugs

And it must have got you fucked up cause you forgot how paragraphs work and you just rambled on about some shit at the end...

To some of us the names are more than a marketing ploy. They are a way for us to keep straight the breeding that was started in the 60's and 70's.

If a friend gives me a clone of White Widow, I can look for information about that strain, and I can look for other people who have experience growing it. Can't really say you could do that back in the day.

I would hypothesize that 90% of the strains we are smoking today came from your weed back then. If that is true, then does that mean that all the breeding and selection that has been done since has isolated worse plants than you smoked back then?

    Humbly, I don't think so.

If you are smoking what you are smoking because of a name, I feel bad for you. The name is just there so if you find something you like, you know what to ask for again.

My intention isn't an argument, but this isn't the first time someone has said that weed has gotten worse over the years. But all the reports I read, scientific or otherwise, indicate that marijuana is significantly stronger on the whole than it was years ago.

    Just one growers opinions...

Even in the 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s, etc. all the way back to the dawn of time - there have been extremely potent varieties (strains) of cannabis.

I would say many of the exotic and "pretty" species were lost due to governments ploy to strangle any sense of enlightenment - but some are preserved by the smart grower.

All in all, potency is always relative to the bud you are smoking - so in essence, potency has not changed; the amount of buds that ARE potent has increased. It was always there, just not so signficantly to the average toker.

I disagree that it all tastes the same. I guess it depends on how sensitive your palate is, but I can definitely tell differences in flavor. I'm enjoying Sage lately, and it does taste like its namesake. It's funny though about the whole taste test thing. I've seen shows where someone goes out back with a garden hose and fills a bunch of water bottles and hands them out, saying it's Italian spring water or some BS, and everyone just moons over the stuff like it's the best water ever! I've seen the same thing with yogurt, where they'll just squirt a little chocolate syrup in it, and tell you it's strawberry, and the people are totally convinced they're eating strawberry yogurt. I guess it depends on the individual, but to some folks, it probably does all taste the same.

You must be smoking some bammer!

    A word from DJ Short

"Ask any old-time herbalist, one who has been experiencing fine herb since at least the early 1970's, what their favorite all-time herbal variety was, and the answer will be something to the effect of; ā??Santa Marta or Acapulco Goldā? or ā??Highland or Chocolate Thaiā? or ā??Punta Roya (red-tipped gold Highland Oaxacan)ā? or ā??Guerran Greenā? or ā??Panama Redā? etc. et. al., all of which were equatorial, or sub-tropical, origin sativa and hermaphroditic. "-DJ short (Cataloguing System Article)

There is your difference, Indica is the new thing.

I'm so 'old-school' I remember when everything on the street was sativas  ... and, how I cussed the introduction of hashplants (indica), that was hybridized with my sativas, to add weight, and speed harvest ... it was all about money, not quality :wtf: ... nowadays, though, the pendulum has swung back, and is catching up ... I hope so, anyway ... QUALITY seems to be more sought-after, so I think our finest smoke, is the 'modern' smoke (but, not by much, and only the best out there) ... just my :twocents:
