Yes it is normal and very good. At first they are small feathery roots, then you will see them turn into thick hard roots hanging down. Water roots to feed. Air stones are good and sounds like your roots are good too.

The more root mass that is in the water, the more air you will need to sustain them. If they start turning brown or getting slimy, get more air in there ASAP. Also be concious of temp of your res, mine is about 75 on average during the summer months which is the high end of the spectrum so be careful.

I'm interested in trying out the hydroponic method, but I'm not sure where to start. What size reservoir do I need to start growing 6 plants? And what nutrients do I need?

MDCANNA: start small, and follow the K.I.S.S. policy. 5 gallon bucket, drop-in net pot, hydroton, rockwool starter cubes, and an airpump / airstone. I use GH Grow / Micro / Bloom three-part formula (mostly because GH has a great PDF for Week 1 - harvest to start from). Grow into other (more complicated) systems later. BTW: keep a detailed grow log so you can fiddle with the nutes moving forward for better yield.

Sneekymofo: Thanks for the suggestions... Is growing hydroponic from start to finish the same amount of time with soil in terms of harvesting? roughly 3 - 4 months?

Faster. Most strains flower in 2 months. Clones veg about a month, seedling about 2 months and autoflower BAM your there. Soil will take you much longer.

We have clones in hydro that are as big as the mother in dirt in 1 months veg time. The only reason we keep mother in soil is because it's slow and we only need clones about once a month for a sea of green. She can take her time. LOL

I wish I knew....never grown in dirt.....but I do know that even slow strains like Jack can be completely done from seed in 3.5 months. I've even had some mystery sack stuff turn at 2.5 from seed, but have since been unable to duplicate....after that grow I have never failed to take a clone of everything before flower, just in case!
