Does it do any good to put lights half way up th plants or down low? I'm using cfls if that matters

It's a splendid idea; it will allow the lower branches/popcorn buds to receive more light and fatten up. CFL's are great to use for this, just be careful with the extra heat.

CFLs should be just a few inches from the part of the plant you want to illuminate.
And yes, CFLs are good for supplimental side lighting.

i've got a bulb in the bottom of my box. none on the side at the moment though.
like they said, it's a good idea and CFLs are great for this purpose.
