    Plant Bio Majors?

Hello fellow biologists and plant lovers!

I have been a long time lurker of these forums but have never really had the time to make an account and interact with anyone.

I am currently in the process of getting my degree in Biology with a focus on Plants. I love plants, not just the one specific to these boards. I tell you, if you ever need help finding plants to arrange in your garden, no matter your hardiness zone, just ask. I love to research plant options for gardens.

    Few facts about me:

My favorite herb is Rosemary, specifically the Tuscan Blue variety. It's very rich and buttery smelling.

    Favorite Color is Dark Green

I LOVE to cook. Favorite cooking shows: Tyler's Ultimate and Barefoot Contessa

Favorite Side Dish: Rosemary Parmesan Sweet Potato Fries!!! Just ask if you want my recipe

If there are any other plant biology fanatics around here please let me know, I seriously am amazed by this field of science. Don't care too much for animals, I'm very squeemish and can't stand dissections.

By the way, just call me sauce or SMG

welcome to the boards SMG. glad to have you here.

we've seem to have crossed paths on another thread before this. thanks again for the info!

i'm not a bio major (yet). i am however a plant and science lover! since i've started growing cannabis i've gained a fondness for plants. they are amazing things. i mush say however, that i am in my infancy in my knowledge on the subject.

i have decided that this is the way that i want to go in school though. i've just got to get it rolling and figure out specifics.

    damn, sorry for the rambling.

    welcome again.

I completely support your interest in plants! If you ever want to just talk about plants in general let me know, I'll give you my e-mail, if that is allowed on these forums. I also think you can find my e-mail in my profile page.

    Plant Bio Majors?

    Hello SMG and welcome,

I am rather found of horticulture and growing things, so much so a few years ago I went and took a few college courses. Got me into the importants of various light wavelenghts and that sent me down the slippery slope of LEDs.

Since you like meristems so much, have you done any tissue culture work?
It's an area I want to move towards, but have been busy with alot of other things. I'm looking for someone who's got some inclination towards not just propagating that way but manipulating our plant that way.

Oh yeah, what DP said, I like that too.

I was going to tissue culture this REALLY awesome colored rose cutting...however...the professor I was going to work with is (kind of) loopy and he totally forgot about our appointment and I never rescheduled so my cutting died and I lost my chance. However, I believe he is going to teach me how to TC carrots for some reason. I'll take a free lesson!

But I HAVE to explain this rose to you. These rose petals were virally infected to change its solid deep maroon color to a striped maroon and gold like the UofM colors. Oh my gosh it was soooooo pretty. I'm really upset I didn't save it. That would have been a great addition to my greenhouses already 200+ species collection...

Here's a question, besides cannabis, what's your favorite plant genus?

P.S. - manipulating our plant (cannabis) in what way?

P.P.S. - Oldmac: I love your name and avatar. I have one of those old school power macs in my basement! Still works and everything! I'm a mac loyal computer guy, PC's make me want to hit things...and that's rare for me

    Hey SMG,

Sounds like you have a great collection of plants going, I envy you.

My second favorite plants are bromeliacae, the fact that many have "air" roots really gets me going. It is one of the reasons I'm headed in the direction of growing in an aero/fog-ponic system, want to grow in a cloud. Plus many have trichomes just like cannabis. (well minus the THC)

I have already tried some tissue culture, with african violets. A woman I see about once a week at the senior center near me has a thriving bussiness in her garage, propagating thousands of african violets that she wholsales to Wal and K marts. I've worked with her a few times, to see how it is done and try my hand at it. I've been amazed at how many plantlets she can produce in such a small space, on shelves with minium lighting. Biggest space user is when she transplants to 4" square pots for final rooting before sale.

So far tho I have not been successful in applying it to mj. Mostly because I lack the time...I'm envolved in two grows (my own and a partnered deal) plus I see anywhere from 4 to 10 patients a day from the cancer and hospice groups I work with.

Been hoping to find someone who had micro-propagated mj and might know how to do some strain comboing, that is if it's possible.

The avatar was given to me on another site by a mod....he thought it fit the name. I'm a scot and I'm old is how that came about. Wish I had a mac right now, 'cause I do hit things 'cause of this PC (not so rare for me. LOL) Ah next time I get a Mac.

Look forward to your postings, photoperiods seem to be very much debated topic (and UVB shhhhhhh!)
