can somone please explane what this is?

hey guys can somone please tell me what this brown "thing" is on the stem of my seedling?[attachment=o220982]
i tryed pulling it off with tweezers but then i hesitated because i didnt want to kill it, but i removed the old seedling shell about 3 hours before and this "thing" was under it.
