Riverbanks will tend to be very sandy soil, so be prepared to dig big holes and bring in quality soil mix.
Riverbanks can be risky since the cops know to look there and they fly up and down them looking for grows. Also, fishermen and hikers will more likely travel along a riverbank.
They can also get flooded out if it rains heavy or some beaver decides to dam the stream for his lodge.
Being close to a river is great cuz you don't have to schlep water over great distances, but it is riskier. You would probably still have to water your plants if the river bank is significantly higher than the water table.
The one really good thing about riverbanks is that you can plant on the north side of a river that runs west-east and get excellent exposure to the southern sun for most of the day.
