Bad Hermi Situation
Heya all,
I had a close friend as me to come look at his little operation. It seems two buds of his plants (outdoor strain) have had buds start to seed!!(Female clones btw)
The only problem is these plants are only a few of many and he is really freaking out!! He has quarantined them (only the outdoor ones that were in close prox to the others)
But a few questions if i may,
1) He was told that due to the genetics of being an outdoor strain this may be freaking them out and causing the hermi's. Is this possible?
2) What are a few other reasons for only a bud turning hermi (stress or other related possibilities..?)
3) I have actually found what looked like a banana ontop of one of the crowns.. Is this what you guys mean when referring to not wanting banana's??
Thanks heaps guys!tristan1986 Reviewed by tristan1986 on . Bad Hermi Situation Heya all, I had a close friend as me to come look at his little operation. That's exactly what we don't want!!! Are these grown indoors or outdoors? If they are indoors there is probably a light leak somewhere. The 12 hours of dark has to be PITCH black. If they are outdoors there may be a streetlamp or something hitting them at night.

Hermi's are caused due to stress. When the plant thinks its chances of surviving and being pollinated by another plant are slim, it makes its own pollen and does it itself just in case. In this case, evolution sucks.
As the last post said, its probably a light leak. If the plant is outdoors, the slow and gradual change of the intensity and length of time the sun is up makes the need for absolute darkness less important. However, indoors, you switch "seasons" and day and night times very abruptly by turning the lights from on to off very quickly, which is fine, as long as your dark is perfectly dark, so as not to confuse the plant. Remember, these plants weren't really meant to be grown indoors!
If the plant has already set seeds, there's really nothing you can do to stop the seeds from forming. If you want to stop further bananas from popping and thereby stop any further pollination, buy some Dutch Master "Reverse" foliar hormone spray and apply it to your plant. It will cause the male parts to shrivel up and die, leaving your buds and everything else in tact. Picking them off is time consuming and if your break one open and it has pollen in it, you probably just pollinated your whole crop.
In the future, have your friend start day one of flower with a spray down of Reverse and a follow up on day 10. Apparently that is all it takes to prevent herms on unstable strains, although I still like to spray every other day through weeks 1 and 3 just to be safe.
A few seeds are nothing to be upset about. I had seeds my first grow due to herms, and I still yielded plenty of good, smokeable bud, but if you've got more than half your flowering time left, you should think about getting some Reverse to stop further pollination. Good luck!:jointsmile:

hermaphrodites are frequently caused by stress, yes, but it also has a LOT to do with genetics ... being 'outdoor seeds', would likely not be the cause :smokin:
