you can keep the bulbs close (withing 1-4" the whole time. there is no need to cut the others.

the only time you need to back the light off is for clones, if i'm not mistaken.

Im using three Sun Blaster 48" 54 watt single bulb High output 64k 4680 lumens at 77 degrees Fahrenheit Also one 23watt soft white 1600 lumens and one 27 watt daylight 1400 lumens cfl.
