    question about harvesting time

A really strong magnifying glass, or even better, one of those pocket microscopes (shown below) would be great to get very close views of the trichomes. You can usually find them at RadioShack or similar electronic stores, and they don't cost a whole lot. Get your hands on one of those if you can and it'll help you determine harvest time with a whole lot more accuracy.

    question about harvesting time

A 30x jewelers loop is easier to use, can get them pretty cheap on ebay.

    question about harvesting time

Loupes also work as well as a magnifying glass, so which to choose is really a matter of preference. The microscopes can be tricky to use on a plant that's swaying under a fan, but if you're like a lot of growers (myself included ), you might end up taking various bud "samples" before you harvest, and those little microscopes become a whole lot easier (and more accurate) to use when the sample isn't moving.
