matches would add more taste to the weed than would butane. merely because burning fossil fuels the by product, if no sulfur is added as a way to detect the odor, is going to be h20 and co2. its chemistry. its when the flame is changed in some way that the by products of combustion can be tasted, as in the butane doesnt burn fully it creates soot and the like. but at the same time the aroma of match wood isnt really an unpleasant one so comparatively the taste may be enhanced to some.

i actually read this really cool way that you can take a DVD burner and a mini mag light, and with less than $20 of modification and a little knowhow you can actually create a laser that can burn things. for example you can burn through a piece of paper, watch the video, and it uses nothing but some batteries. how is that for efficient, cheap, and clean?
the soldering iron is always a neat trick, just place the tip near or on the green and your set. the only problem is it is really hot usually several hundred degrees above whats necessary and they usually have a short cord and no safe way to store it so it wont burn things accidentally, and yes accidents happen, that is why they are accidents.
any lighter that has a good flame would be the one i choose. you cant really go wrong with a bic usually but ive had a few i didnt like, flame too big, or too small. the cheapos are unrealiable but still work pretty well. i dont really trust torch lighters all that much the heat is very hot even where there is no color. and you can blow the loose weed around on top of bowls.

But. My opinion on this whole light preference issue is kinda just about the best "ignitor"
First off i think, if im assuming you're talking about igniting a "bowl" piece, than its about how you, the inhaler, toke it like jimmy said. If its the same bic lighter i will smoke with it a lot differently full and new than when the flame on that bic has dwindled and is almost empty. So this goes for any type of gas/butane light. Its not about how hot it is but more how long and how much you use that source of flame..in my opinion..so no best lighter..only favorites:thumbsup:
Well im not gonna touch the whole taste thing because i just taste the weed but I do notice the difference every so often with different lights. Definitely weird with a match for me. Whats the best taste? I'll leave that to the connoisseurs as I am merely a voice here

I got some too, just hasn't gotten hear yet. I had to ebay it they don't sell it in my area, but after token bong hits of hash, I had to try this, because don't matter if you use a bic, or a match anything short of the sun and you taste the hell out of it.

I'm using the beeline now , just started today, and it is more pleasant, than a lighter or a match or whatever. kinda nice especially for hash hits in the bong. Really nice

what's your technique to near-vaporizing using a lighter? Is it that you put the flame as far down into the bowl as possible (since the tip of the flame is the hottest) ?

bics are the best lighters. they last forever, are pretty durable, and are also pretty cheap in price. I dont ever taste the gas in my hits.

I just hold the flame about 1/4 inch above the bowl, and when you see the weed start to brown then take the flame away, mix up the bowl a bit and repeat. Works pretty good.
