The Truth about LEDS......They are amazing New to the site but wanted to say hi and show everyone what great leds are all about. Dont believe the negative hype.....they work...and work well. Just like any other product there is better best worse. I have had exceptional resulst from my led grows. The only argument anyone can make about leds now is the price. Those have dropped considerably in the last year. Leds offer the exact spectrum plants use for photosynthesis without stressing the plant out with un-needed spectrum that has Rating: 5

That's 435 watts actual LED output.
I can't quantify equivilant HID I'm afraid.
335wats above the canopy and 100 watts as side lighting to support the lower branches. I turn the plants 1/4 turn each light cycle.

Excellent thread!
I've used HID lamps in the past, and I'm thinking about getting started with my hobby again. What kind of LED lamps do people recommend? I'd love to give it a try!

There is one additional benefit to LEDs that I have not heard mentioned anywhere else.
Light leakage.
Now to those who have a sealed room or a light-proof tent, this is a non-issue. However, as I have a small closet grow, it is a big concern for me. I cannot light seal because of ventilation issues.
Most of the light from the LEDS is not optimized for human viewing, but for plants, so right there is a big savings. Also because LEDs are so directional, the light does not bounce all over like with fluoro or HID.
If I were to quantify, from outside the closet I would say the light leakage is reduced 80-90% over my CFLs.
