Jake's Bunches O' Beans Grow Log

The water is really startin' to warm up, so I thought I'd finally jump in....

What we have here is my 3rd grow log which will hopefully lead me to a greater understanding of growing the green. I've learned a bit from my previous grows - mainly because I know how to fuck shit up and I learn the hard way. And, if it weren't for this great board and the kindness of its incredibly experienced members, I would never have gotten my hands dirty. Thanks to all of you!

The beans/seedlings/plants you will bear witness to herein are:

    1st Batch
    2 Bubblelicious
2 Old School - bagseed from bagweed that reminds me of my high school daze
    1 PPP
    1 Colombian Red Haze

    2nd Batch
    1 Lemon Skunk
    1 Northern Lights
    2 Sour Cream
    3 Super Silver Haze

    3rd Batch
    2 Lemon Skunk
    2 Northern Lights

Now, as you will notice, I screwed up my first batch pretty good when I sprayed them with an over-concentrated Neem Oil mix. The lower leaves look burned and disfigured. The spray turned many of the leaves white/transparent and stunted the crap out of 1 OS, the PPP, and the CRH. Like I said, I know how to tear shit up! But, the point is made, and I will read directions on how to properly mix any and all items that will contact my plants - Lesson Learned.

The plants began their lives soaked in water until they sank, thereafter finding themselves in an airy wet paper towel placed on a plate on top of my cable box. All popped tap roots in such manner, and the only casualties (1 LS and 1 NL only suffered because I can fuck shit up! - I pulled their caps off a bit early, resulting in the wilting of the cotyledons).

Once taproots showed, the beans were placed with taproots down in peat pellets with beans covered by a small amount of peat - about the depth of the width of the bean. Once roots began showing through the sides of the peat pellets, I placed/will place them in 20oz Silo cups. I poked 1 hole in the bottom of the cups with other drain holes poked around the bottom sides. All plants are in a soil mixture containing mainly Scott's Premium Soil, which is a very light and airy mulch-like mixture; I really like it so far. I've added about 1/4 more Perlite. The 1st Batch also enjoys a bit of added Vermiculite. And, when transplanting into the Silo cups I added/add a sprinkling of rooting hormone powder to aid in root development.

I have not broken down to purchase any really good nutrients - I need to, but will probably only do so when my conveniently purchased Lowe's/Home Depot available nutes are gone. I have for veg - Schultz Plant Food Plus with 10-15-10 percentages. My flower nutes are Green Light Super Bloom having percentages of 12-55-6.

I have followed the general rule of thumb of mixing nutes around 1/4 to 1/2 strength starting out, and work my way up to full strength - backing off and flushing if notice any ill effects. I really am looking forward to these nutes being gone, as I know my life will be much easier working with more cannabis-friendly nutes with real mixing/feeding schedules.

With all of that lengthy preamble out of the way, we join our log already in progress with pictures from yesterday - pictures to be posted below in add-on posts.

Jake's Bunches O' Beans Grow Log

1st Batch was around day 36 of veg - I track start of veg from poppin' of the cotyledons. I know some people track veg differently, providing for the time when the sprout is a mere seedling, which when leaving the seedling stage then enters the vegetative phase. I have a sincere problem with counting, so I'm keeping it as simple as possible.

These pictures show the 2 Bubblelicious. The first 2 pics show the confirmed male, which I am keeping to breed with select females so I don't have to keep buying beans. I topped the male below all of its pollen sacs in an effort to slow it down while the other plants show sex. The next 2 pics show the 2nd Bubblelicious, which hasn't showed sex. The final picture shows the 2nd Bubblelicious where I topped it.

More pics of the 1st Batch to follow below....

The first pic here is of the healthy Old School - it still has some deformed leaves, and it's only healthy in comparison to the other OS, which is shown in the 2nd pic; notice how stunted and awkward the growth is? The 3rd pic shows an equally ugly PPP, and the final 2 pics show the burgeoning CRH.

The PPP and the CRH are really beginning to come on strong since I've begun their vegetative nutrient regime. I don't know if it shows in these pics but that over-concentrated Neem Oil incident fimmed the tops of the PPP and the CRH. Basically I think it burned off their tops.

The first pic is a nice group shot which shows all of the 2nd Batch beauties early in their development. You should see the markings on the sides of the Silo cups showing which plant is which strain. The EG in the mix is an Early Girl tomato.

The 2nd pic is an apical shot of a Sour Cream (DNA).

The 3rd pic is a shot of the Northern Light (Homegrown Fantaseeds).

The 4th pic is of the Lemon Skunk (Feminized Greenhouse Seeds).

And, the 5th and final pic is of a Super Silver Haze (breeder unknown as the seeds came from a dang good bag from a friend - local growers who know what they're doing). I found 8 beans in the bag - lucky me!

Last but not least is the 3rd Batch. Due to my previously-mentioned issues with a LS and a NL, I decided I needed a couple more of each in my mix.

The first pic shows the close group shot - the peat pellets were placed in an old muffin pan to keep them in order so I remember which is which, as well as to keep a small bit of water in each to keep them from drying out. Lemon Skunks are top with Northern Lights on bottom. The stray NL on the left is 1 that I yanked its cap off too early. It's first set of leaves is extremely small, spilling out of the stem; I'm not sure it will make it, but I don't want to throw it out just yet as it has stayed green and healthy so far.

The 2d pic is of a LS.

The 3rd pic is of a NL.

The 4th pic is of the other NL with its cap still on; I pulled its cap off earlier today, and it's cotyledons are spreading in the sunshine.

The 5th pic is of an African Violet - turned out to be a decent macro shot, so I thought I'd fill the last photo slot with somethin' perty for all you flower lovers. I mainly like flowers with incredible scent, such as Gardenias, but these African Violets are truly beautiful.

Sweet! fluid, it's good to see you on board, especially so early! I appreciate you following along - you can get to see me goof on these plants showing how hardy and how much torture they can really endure at the hands of a novice grower.

The LS is a fem variety from Greenhouse; they were relatively inexpensive as a fem, which is why I actually bought them. I'm pretty darn cheap. The rest of the beans I purchased (SC from DNA and NL from Homegrown Fantaseeds) are not fem. I'm not certain of the SSH heritage or the bagseed, as you stated. The bagseed is interesting though, as several have had the purple stems, which is genetic as compared to a nute deficiency since I noticed it on a previous grow last year. The Bubblelicious and PPP are both Nirvana, and the Colombian Red Haze is from Seedsman - you can check out a previous grow log of mine on the CRH (I think I called it Red Colombian Haze, since I'm 1/2-way dyslexic). The CRH is an incredible smoke - sweet sativa dominance!

Thanks again for stoppin' in, fluid!

And, I look forward to any and all other comments, suggestions, and salutations!

Jake, I was just about to ask you if you had a grow going and look at what I found:rasta: And aren't you the ambitious Elvis 17 babies. I'm good at screwing things up too fortunately I am almost as equally good at mousing over my screw ups.
They are all looking good even your first batch. Are they outside? If they are then they'll have plenty of time to recover from their neem od. If they are inside I'd give them at least 6 weeks before flipping them. While neem oil is safe to use and all that I'd want to make sure that the "extra" dose of it is long gone before I'd smoke it but that's just me
