I had the same problem you need to find away to adjust the amount of air presure going to air stone. I clamped the main air pipe from my air pump i still get enough bubbles and vritually no noise.

I placed the air pumps (3 of them) on top of styrofoam and I still have an INSANELY loud humming noise downstairs underneath the room! I feel a slight vibration under my feet when I'm working in the room with them! This is getting annoying! If we can hear it downstairs, chances are the neighbors can. No problems have arisen, yet!
