I had a rose bush that I transplanted once in the spring that turned completely brown and brittle enough to break off the top. The following autumn it had leaves and new growth all over it. I attribute the success to banana peels.

I have had similar occurances with younger pepper plants (jalapeno). I know they need the leaves to collect energy to grow, but I think the stored energy in the roots gives enough of a boost to keep it going until it can grow new leaves.
