I used to partake in the hobby with a 1000W HPS light. Heat and my electric bill were always concerns. I'm interested in getting started again, and I think LEDs would be the way to go. What do you think I would need to see similar results to a 1000W HPS?
    Thanks!
right now the ufo's have the bridge lux 4th qtr cree diodes-an absolute must IMHO- and 1000 w of hps is a special thing, and at this point nothing could feasibly top it.You would have to drop a couple grand to even come close, not equal, to a 1000w of hps.Right now I'm starting a cfl/led thread-maybe, just maybe the combo will get us closer to those sweet hid results.

I have a 120 watt no-name light with the 1 watt Bridgelux LEDs and it appears very solid. (Too soon to give growing feedback.)

I picked up some of the 50 watt China panels with 0.5 watt 10mm LEDs. They are very bright and grow well. I picked them up for under $60 apiece on E-Bay. However, they are very flimsy and the power supplies are highly suspect. I would only buy them again (or any LED light) with a decent warrantee.

hell yeah man, I've got a 50 watt red budding panel from htg supply with a power converter that you can fry an egg on by the end of the day.I only have them on when I'm home, so I know what you mean brother-be careful. But they are damn bright and grow plants well-just the designs a little scary.

Exactly. As a former engineer, what pisses me off is it would only cost a few more bucks to do the design right. They cut corners on the regulator and heatsink. Thay aren't going to be losing any sales by charging $5 more for a safe unit.

My blue one burned up while I was at home, thank FSM.

It just shows how fly by night some of these places are-if they'd have done any kind of real testing, they would have seen the problem. But no, slave labor profits arent enough, they have to cut corners on QC- as an engineer you know how important testing is.No one ever says oh that cross-bracing "should" be good enough- or I "think" that structural steel is ok, why isnt it the same when it comes to burning down peoples homes? No wonder this technology has taken so many lumps.

My 120 watter is built like a tank, is heavy and has three cooling fans (like the UFOs) and runs very cool to the touch. Yay!

I just noticed that my E-Bay vendor added this subtitle on their 50 watter:
NEW POWER CIRCUIT DESIGN, MORE EFFIENT(sic) & PROBLEM FREE!!

Translation: We did piss-poor engineering and all our customers complained about units overheating/frying so we decided to do it right to stay in business.
