Attempted #2 still in the dark about some things

This is not my first plant. But after my first run I am still not clear on everything I would like to be. ( I can show some pics of the first plant )

I have been trying to do this without any help but at the same time I feel that I do need help. I am just growing in my closet with a 250w HPS light.

Main question is did I waste my money getting a 250w HPS light? I dont intend to grow a lot just enough for myself really.

There really are only a few question I have to ask you all talented growers!

During Vegetation stage how long do I keep the lights on a 24/0 set up?
Do I want to cut down the light cycle as it grows or do I want to keep it at 24/0 untill the flowering process?
With watering using Miracle Grow I make a gallon mixture and then add a tiny bit of that mixture in to the actuall water. Its just a splash really cus of how strong it is. ( should I keep doing that or try to find some stuff from of the shelves of a store? )
What watering rotation should I use with plant food?

I have a new plant going and its about 6 weeks old. This is what it looks like now. ( it looks blue cus I had to whitebalance with the bright ass orange color light )thats a no no pictures by JuyoToken - Photobucket
It is the Very first picture of the album. In the album I had another plant pics but it was just me learning trying to figure out what I was trying to do

I did learn to not use that watering mixture i said for about 5 weeks strait. ( i got VERY "little" chemical burn only on 1 leaf. ) This was about 3 days ago and I immediately switched back to just normal water. Now my should I wait about 2 weeks before I start pumping it with chemicals again? Or should I just use a chemical mixture 1 time a week? This whole watering thing is mainly my problem. I did get my first plant over 5ft tall but at the same time I was in the dark about everything.

Today I decided to move my plant only 12in away from the light in hoping that it will do more?

I know this this one isnt a thread on what I need to do but I also want to keep everyone updated on my stuff as well!!!

a 250hps sounds mighty fine for finishing 1 plant, but how's the ventilation and temps? I'm using MG organic garden soil and the MG ferts. But I dilute to 1/4 str while they are babies. Also a little 20$ ph kit will help. Gona shoot ya a couple links. Covers basic neuts, temps, lighting, ventilation. Ya know. The best way to look at it is to put yourself in the plant's place and see if it's too hot, too moist, and so on.

looking decent only 2 things i see might be problems. one looks like you are probably taking care of. The plant looks a little stretched maybe, the closer light will help with that. The miricle grow plant food. dunno what kind you are using or for what stage its for. I say find some sort of liquid plant food I used Shultz 10-15-10 for veg.(you can get at home depot) for flower i switched to Fox farms stuff for flower that is expensive and hard to find so you might ask some one else if you need something different or cheaper. There are also Tons of Good info forums on Basic growing info such as light, ferts, temps, Vents, lights, any thing else you want to know and the only thing that will help you is to Start Reading. For me i think it has saved my plants 20 times over now just reading, you can scour the forums for just about any thing you want/ need/ didnt care to know about.
