you guys ever hear of the theory that "fuck" is an acronym? from what i hear, unless you were a king, you had to have consent from the king to fornicate. therefore, Fornication Under Consent of King. FUCK. always thought that was interesting.

and canna, you're absolutely right. words are words are words. its people who give them their power, and idiotic and insecure people who give power to the wrong words. can you imagine if the world held such a high reverance for intelligent speaking, but in a positive way? like if people stared and admired well-spoken people the same way that "foul-mouthed" individuals get negative attention...?

my feelings have always been that no one can make you feel any way. anyone can say anything to you, but you make the choice if it affects you. in the moment, i'll admit, sometimes this is hard to agree with. but stepping back and viewing the big picture is a huge strength, one that many people don't possess.

pretty much my sentiments exaclty!

we chose to give words meaning and also chose which words are "swear" words or "cuss" words. and by me, i mean society. we as a society generally dictate what is acceptable and what is not.

like golden said, words are just that. you can get by in life with a minimum vocabulary. but why not own what you say, or say exactly what you mean. to me words portray different levels of emotion, or a different shade of color if you will.

no matter what words are said, it's a choice to get offended. words have no power if we don't give them power. we just have to be more particular and less emotional with the words we choose to put stock into.

just a little food for thought ( i like to think, believe it or not). why do black people get mad when a white person uses the N-bomb? i mean think about it. it was first used by white people to put down an entire race. that race took the word and used it as a sign of family or respect. now the race that created it uses it to the race they made the original derogatory comments towards to mean the same family and respect. to me that is poetic justice.

i don't know. maybe i'm just weird.

Words are communication and are vital to any society.
Words on thier own are pretty limited, they have to have meaning otherwise they're useless.
There is also the context and of course the inflection, where , when and how words are used can completely change thier meaning.

i'm in construction, we use all the swear words more than any other words,and i use them much more than most they are just words,that can help you express yourself, but if people dont like it, it's tough shit their problem and they can go fuck themselfs.these sad wankers need to get a life and stop bitching about a few simple words.:jointsmile:

I see your point for sure. I love cursing because of the texturization I believe it brings to my speech, but I use it sparingly so the effect will never be lost. Context....hmmm. Yes, it's all about the perception and the stigma, I guess. For me, "cunt" is no more offensive than "vulva" (and is even a much more beautiful word due to its sheer vibrance and energy: wow, I'm high), but it's so hammered into all of us that certain words are too powerful to be used. That's what it's all about: the power of certain words is frightening. I think the concept of foul language is a fairly recent phenomenon..."cunt" appears in The Canterbury Tales, for example...it didn't become a big deal until later, until, in my theory, the sheer energy packed into that one syllable became unbearable. If the word "love" only referred to the heart-shattering feeling of fleeting oneness that grips us all from time to time, I'm sure it would be used with caution, too. Instead, because it has become so casual ("I love that salad"), it's frequently used. If it referred only to its highest form, it probably would have become associated with the carnal and forbidden too. Plus, I think the sound has to do with it, too..."love" is a soft and delicate word despite the V sound, conjuring up images of languishing on rose petals, whereas anyone who knows love knows that there is much more suffering involved. "Cunt" has a harsh sound that brilliantly displays its vibrance, and ironically it refers to one of the most beautiful things around. "Vagina" to me is an unpleasant word that seems to be a clinical shield against fulling expressing what the thing is, which the c word conveys with all the power it can muster. Humans are strange, and their languages are so fascinating.

To whoever talked about Fornication Under Consent of the King....I always heard For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge as signs above the publically shamed, but either way it's a myth. The word derives from the German, I believe.

If anyone thinks "love" being a dirty word if non-relegated seems a stretch...yes, because of the soft and delicate connotations of the word that glosses over the full reality of what we call love. If there were a word that could encompass the full range of genuine and perceived affection in all its forms...it wouldn't be considered polite.

Everything I have read says it is a very hard word to trace the origin of. I'm sure it's etymology. That sounds like a reasonable guess though. I know most of our complex words derive from latin, most of the common and shorter ones are Germanic.
