Don't cut more than 1/3 the plant.
failure can be...that what you take for clones...they die. But if the main plant lives, she will get wider and make more branches for you to try again in a few weeks. And with the root to shoot ratio...there is almost no fail if you don't chop too much...as having reduced the "shoot" with intact and healthy "roots", she will veg more quickly.
BUT:
If you have many plants and not so much space, be aware that topping will produce plants that become more bushy. YES more bud sites, but many bushy plants in VEG, can become too much when they get and grow in F-zone...so it's atleast something to think about.
If looking specifically for clones....
I do a lower branch pruning of plants that are in flowering phase (3-5) weeks into flowering. I'm talking about very low branches that will not produce good/much bud..and I've had great sucess and getting clones from what would have just gone into hash bin...

It's pretty hard to goof up, so don't worry too much about doing it wrong. In fact, many plants that are topped 'wrong' end up producing more shoots than a plant that was topped right. This is commonly referred to as the "FIM (Fuck, I missed) technique."
