Lift board straight up 9.7"
Rotate 180 degrees clockwise.
slowly lower, exaclty 9.7".
Repeat.

Big chunky carved pieces suddenly make sense to me, as do those little "travel" sets with pegs on the bottoms of the pieces and holes in the board (if they still make 'em.)
