Okay, I see what happened. I reconstructed my board according to your photo in post #205, which I think was a (my) miscommunication of which knight was which. Pity, I kinda liked him there. Lemme put him back to QB3 and check my position, I may want to re-make that move.

All right, it looks like I'll do okay initiating an exchange by attacking your K5 pawn with either of my knights. Since the K kn 5 knight controls fewer squares and is less able to defend my king (than my QB3 knight), I'll start with him. If this plan carries through I'll lose both knights but win a pawn, a bishop, and a rook.

That only works if black gets greedy and chases down the trade, yah?

Looks even, but white profited.
Blacks pawn had time invested and was an immenent threat.
Black's QRP was passive, but critical to white's pawn promotion in end game.

Fortunately, white's position is now very well balanced.

Unfortunately white must now move something without upsetting that balance.

I've been trying to decide whether to take him with my QR, which would sorta develop that piece but at the same time would move him away from protecting my king;

or with my Q Kn pawn.

Big time! I was going after da undefended KP.

Havin our kings off the kings file keeps screwin' me up.
I check a move on da board an by da time I get back to da pooter, ('bout 15'),
it's all about da meds of course.
"A touch is a move." so you can hold me to it if you wish.
It will drastically shorten da game though.

Would I have been better off taking the piece with my rook, moving him into better (maybe) offensive position but diminishing his ability to protect the king (at least, as it seemed to me); OR simply taking him with the pawn as I finally decided?

You'll prolly never see that choice in a non-stoner game, but.

Best would be the rook capture.
Brings the rook into the fray.
He was underemployed protecting a single pawn.
And it sets him free to actually defend the king.

The pawn capture would break white's "pawn chain" ,
which is very important in the end game.
It does come at a high price
and is not worth a bishop sacrifice.

Snatching the KRP is not only a freebie, but will enhance Blacks chance for pawn promotion on the king's side.
The king side defense crumbles,
and the path then opens, wide.

Okay, thanks. Not sure how an end game is actually played. I've only seen the usual silliness of pieces chasing each other around until somebody gets cornered.
