Run the game backwards and forwards until the concepts just jump out at ya.
(I usually take a snapshot of the board and then play both sides a few moves into the future to form a strategy and get a "feel" for the balance of forces.)

Thanks for explaining your thinking in the castling scenario. I had just thought of it as a defensive move to hide the king. (duh) I see now that where you put the rook can be more significant, and that castling has excellent offensive potential.
