What is the most effective Metal Halide/HPS light to use on a 3-4 plant grow? And what would be the dimensions for the grow box I would have to put them in if I go that route?

I allow a minimum of 2 sq. ft. of floor space, per plant, and as tall as physically possible ... my cabinets are around 7 ft. tall, and wish I had more (remember, you lose at least a foot, due to the container height, plus a couple feet more, due to required distance from your plants) ... 50 watts per sq.ft. is advised ... you can veg your plants quite well with the HPS (high-pressure sodium) lamp, you use for flowering, too ... I personally don't see much difference, when using my metal halide, for vegging ... with 4 plants, in the required space, I'd recommend a 400-watt lamp ... you will NEED lots of ventilation, and temperature controls, too ... be sure to leave room for an oscillating fan, too ... good luck :thumbsup:

2 sq ft per plant is about right. I flower 3 (or 4 small) plants in a 5.5' x 30" closet.



I used a 600w HPS in the same closet with a vented hood in addition to venting the grow closet. This will give you around 70+ watts psf. The top range of lighting without using co2. I'm 100% fluoro now.


The use of Metal Halide to augment light in flower will supply the UV(B) light that increases trichome production. (think himalayas and tropics).

The red spectrum of the HPS helps make dense buds.
