dont kill my roots
They will pull apart but you will have some damage. The longer you let roots grow the worse the damage. When you say cubes I assume rockwool.

dont kill my roots
I had some pretty significant root tangles in hydro, before ... I grit my teeth, and just snipped through them, with a big pair of scissors (I soaked them in hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes, first) ... no apparent stress to the plant, plenty stress for me

dont kill my roots
I wouldn't just pull them apart. Stretching the roots to the point of failure isn't optimal. Just the act of stretching them kills the cells all along the length of the root being pulled.
Having bonsai'd hundreds of cannabis plants, I know that severing the roots is less stressful, and easier to heal from, than just ripping them apart.
