The --/-- stands for X hours on/X hours off. So if you're doing 18/6, you've got 18 hours of light, 6 hours of dark. And there's no need to go in any kind of cycle when you're switching, if I'm understanding what you're asking. It's perfectly fine to go from 24/0 straight to 12/12, no need to slowly work your way to it.
