First Pic- Vegged for 30 days, no buds yet

Second pic- 2 weeks into flowering. Small hairs grow at the tips of each growth shoot.

Third Pic- Buds start to form underneath the hairs

Fourth Pic- Just before harvest

Fifth Pic- Dried Harvest. Now you just cut the buds off the stems. All of those big tops are just individual buds growing from the main stem, all stacked around and on top of each other.

And yes, you can smoke the leaves. After a couple weeks of flowering, even smoking fan leaves got me high. But, I hadn't smoked for 6 months before that...

You kids are so dang spoiled! We "old hippies" were raised on kiloed Mex dirt weed that contained stems, seeds, leaves, and buds (and occasionally the roots, too!) And we smoked everything but the roots and seeds! (skip the stems- ain't worth it.)

Leaves will get you buzzed and are better than nothing! Get a microscope and LOOK at some leaves- they have trichs! Not half as many as the buds, but they are there! Heck, even some MALE plants have enough that they can give you a respectable buzz- just depends on the plant.

You do NOT want to "sneak" leaves off your plant, while it is growing. That will cut into your harvest later. Leaves feed the plant, every leaf "stolen" will decrease the amount of bud produced. Go buy a bag instead.

Now that I grow, I dry the leaves and blenderize them to make some nice "magic muffins" for the hubby's pain problems. Edibles are quite effective.

The bud at the very top will be the biggest. Secondary buds are at the tip of the branches, with even smaller ones next to some leaves.

Go to the grow section and start READING! You got a LOT to learn!

Thanks for jumping in on my behalf. Yeah, I would never advise anyone to sneak leaves off their plants for the reasons that you said... but hey, 6+ months without smoke will make a man do things that he usually wouldn't :jointsmile:

I started smoking in the U.S. and was spoiled with all of the bud. Then when I came back to Finland, I noticed that there was not as much bud, but people smoked nonetheless. Over here they smoke leaves, home-made hash from stems picked off nugs, and every last smudge of resin from a bong or pipe (a local delicacy for some... not for me though). Acetone seems to be in most hard-core Finnish stoners' homes... I think we go a little over-board sometimes with all the home-made hash and resin extractions. But hey, good times

when I first moved to California in '82, the pot was so much better than I was used to, a buddy used to give me big bags of shake, leaves, etc., and it was GOOD ! :stoned: ... the strains I grow now, have the leaves covered in trichomes, ya sure don't throw that kind of stuff away ... I collect my buds, and cook the rest into brownies :smokin:
