What we're starting to see more of these days are private contractors working for the feds who participate in intelligence gathering.

They participate in front sites as well as legit sites in order to gather incriminating information against individuals, groups, and organizations. When they have collected what they believe to be actionable evidence of criminal activity they forward the information up the chain which is then oftentimes disseminated to the appropriate agency for action. Simply stated, be careful as to what you do and say on the internet. On the other hand, don't run off all paranoid either.
