im not entirely sure but watt for watt perhaps LED would be better?
Although I hear they lack in the far red range?
You always see a comparison between a 100w procyon vs a 400w HPS
how about 4 procyon's @ 400watts vs a 400watt HPS?
Straight up LED vs HPS in the same watts

good topic but before everyone takes off is a million directions maybe we should determin If some of the research that has been done is valid in its statements and results from grows done w LEDs looked at.
ive been tracking the LED thing for 3 years now and in MHO LEDs work very well for vegging if used properly - the thing is that the 2 most serious attempts PROCYON and HGLs UFO are almost cost prohibitive and offer no ability to vary the required light spectrum for BOTH vegging and flowering.
this site GreenPineLane has a dynamite response from industry (LED) engineers and not only is taking a serious look at LEDs but provides instruction and evaluation of other more advanced hydro techs....
stop in and look at the site lotsa pics graphs and valuable stuff.
to me LEDS look good for at least vegging BUT these guys CAN jump to the next phase (LEDS for both veg and flower) ......maybe - if they had some hobbyist intrest?

now a days it seems LED cant compare to yield & quality of HPS. Nasa is said to be reporting pleasing results but i do recall reading many of the most efficient specific spectrums needed have been patiented by holly wood special effects teams.. From what i read LEDs

...you can veg w LEDs ...greenpines has developed a variable spect light. maybe if a few "hobbyist" got together and spoke to these dudes theyd build a few sell em to us then set up a website where our grows can be monitored and they can provide inst on how to tweek the spect via say a web cam?
they are already talking to each other re taking the light to market..

we already use 2 different types of light if one uses 6 600w MH conversion in a 9x12 grow area thats 3600W in lights alone.
IF they can be persuaded to build the lights and monitor our grows (ive already talked over the web site w the admin of GREENPINES) the wattage would drop down to around 1200W...enough of a drop to allow me to grow in the summer using my room AC (1400W) and dehumidifier (1000W) AND we would be the 1st ones to work w a variable spect light focused on tweeking the red end get us the results we want
the timing is right im down for 4 lights id rather not have to buy 10 alone

Watt for Watt they surpass HPS even for blooming.
I'm not talking about "china panels" or 10mm. arrays.
Serious growing requires serious light.
5 Watt emitters at minimum.
I'm using 15W Ledengin emitters.
Real happy with them.
My goal is to equal a 400W HPS with about 60 Watts of LEDs
Get it right, and I can afford to grow my own meds.
(We pay $ .54 per Hwh, here).
Leds do grow decent bud.
I didn't believe it either until I saw what SnStealth managed with some Procyons.
So,
Lashed up a light or 3 of my own and started:weedpoke:.
Getting decent sized buds from 2 50W. homebrew arrays.

You can find details on Dreaded Hermie's thread.
"Calling out to Weezard for led advice".
He's improving on my original light and, (hopefully) posting a grow log as proof of concept.
