    Really???
And why would that be, pray tell....

Speaking and wanting to hold onto your native language is a problem for you
I live close to a Gaelteacht area, which basically means everyone speaks Irish. At home to their children, in their local shops and the children attend Irish schools. They sit the same exams as everyone else but they sit them 'as Gaelige' / in Irish. I have limited Irish language skills, but what little I have I'd like to keep and I love that my children still learn it in school.

I can't see why that would pose any problems for anyone else - are you just pissed off coz you dunno what they're saying?

I've only ever met one Irish person and she was really nice. And I love Guiness too.
I don't know enough about the place or the people to pass judgement.

Let me clear something up, if you are born and live in Ireland, you are Irish. If one of your great grandparents came from Ireland but you were born and live in America, you are American. Not Irish.

But yeah I hate St. Patrick's day, it's retarded. It might as well be called Irish Day, it's got nothing to do with St. Patrick, it's just a load of people buggering about in Guinness hats and green shirts. Oh how Irish.
And since when do Americans have to celebrate it? Get your own holidays. Like Thanksgiving. That's a stupid holiday too.

    turkeys love thanksgiving
well the one that gets saved every year by a prez pardon
i reckon people can celebrate however the fuck the want too
shit id celebrate bastil day,and i know im not french at all
leave the irish and whoever alone, they just people like me and maybe you not sure about your humanity

Just because your Dads brothers cousin once looked at a pint of guinness does not mean you are Irish. To my mind, half the people tha have the Irish pride thing in the USA are about as Irish as....uh......avocado pears.
I'm not Irish? Oh great. what a relief. thanks for clearing that up.

I agree with you 100% being a Scot im ashamed I did not learn my own language, when people say to me I love the way you speak, I now say this is a bastardized english dialect i never learned to speak my own language.

No, it's the fact that there is no need for it. I am generally a logical person, I see little point in Irish people speaking Irish (or Welsh people speaking Welsh, Scottish people speaking Gaelic.) Everyone in Ireland speaks English, not everyone in Ireland speaks Irish. English is the predominant language in Ireland. So why speak Irish? If you intend to seriously lower the number of people that know what the hell you are talking about, go ahead, but otherwise, what's the point?

The point is, lots of our songs, poems, stories and legends were originally written as gaelige and sound and have more meaning when read and sung that way. There was a time when speaking Irish was against the law â?? not any more. If people have an interest and a passion for keeping their heritage alive, why would you have a problem with that???
English is the predominant language in Ireland because we had it imposed on us. I sure hope my throwing in the odd â??cupla focalâ?? doesnâ??t upset you too much
