For minimum price and effort, a 48" flourescent fixture with "cool white" color tubes. Every KMart, Home Depot has them. They do a remarkably good job, and when they're on sale the price is around $12.00 - $15.00 for a 2 tube fixture, often with the tubes thrown in.

hi average im a novice grower too i bought a security light from a local diy store 40 watt hps bulb cost me £30 and it did the job. all i can say is dont get to caught up in all the technical stuff if you just want a bit of weed to smoke for yourself , of course the better the equipment the better the yield but i got about 1 oz of very very nice weed from my plant and it did me :-). hope it helps.
