Normally, you need a male to polinate the female, which develops the seeds. Quantity of seeds depends on quantity of pistols (the white hairs on the female) that are pollinated. One grain of pollen, can make up-to one seed. Less pollen...fewer seeds. More pollen...shitloads of seeds.

If you stress the ladies too much tho, she will start throwing-out her own pollen...and she will pollinate herself, and all the other ladies present. (a defense strategy used by some plants, for preservation of the species through emergencies like fires, floods, high winds, predation...)
