    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

You seem a lot less motivated than I thought. If you lack the get up and go to get up and go, I suggest signing up for a class like yoga or basic martial arts, whatever strikes your fancy, with a friend.

I find going to the gym with a friend always manages to fit itself into my schedule, cause no one wants to be the one to bitch out.

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

I'm afraid you have me pinned fairly well John.....but include the fact that I just one week ago finished chemotherapy for cancer so I will completely agree that I do indeed lack your motivation. I'm really looking for something simple that I can pretend isn't REALLY exercise just to get back into shape and lose the flabby body fat I turned to during chemo. I definitely don't have "what it takes" to run or go to a gym or something......that's for the true dedicated types like you and Linear.

Thanks for stopping by the thread.

Wow deepest apologies dude, I had no idea you were a chemo patient. I dunno if they have a Re-Fit centre around your area, but where I live there's a gym dedicated for those who are recovering from a serious illness. You have your own personal trainer and everything, that might be a good way to get back in the swing of things.

Or you can look at yourself and say, I've beat cancer, why can't I conquer exercise? I'm not trying to poke fun at all dude. All I'm saying is that if you can beat fucking cancer, going for a run should be comparatively easy .

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

Dude, I've got an NASM cert in personal training....

Will a hula hoop be benneficial to your health? Well it's better than sitting on the couch committing genocide on doritos.... but it's not a viable way to exercise, you may be sore the first day, but that's only due to lactic acid buildup from using your muscles in a way in which they're not accustomed to.

Weightloss is literally a conservation of mass equation.... Calories in < Calories out = weight loss...

    It's a simple equation.

Oh, and overall lifting weights burns far more calories, because it rases your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) permanently, so you're always burning more calories through the day, where as running in some instances can cause you to hold onto calories. Not saying running is bad at all, go fucking run, but a well rounded workout routine is best.

Try running on an off day, or go for a nice walk, and then hit up the weights a half hour 3 times a day doing a full body routine, not some fucking arm curls.

    Try

    Squats
    Deadlifts
    Bench
    Rows
    Push Ups
    Pull Ups
    Millitary Press.

You should have a workout done in a half hour.

If you want, send me a PM and I can help you more with activities you can do at home to help you keep in shape, I'm good at giving advice for "at home" people who work out, with limited equipment.

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

I don't mean to be rude but......I knew I should have put this in the womens forum.

Max, thanks for all the input....thats a long, informative post but I'm afraid all you MEN out there are completely missing the question.....which was.....how about a hula hoop for exercise.....yay or nay? Amongst everything else I actually did get the shift that you guys thinks it's for wussies.....which I am so that sounds about right

Since I finished chemo a week ago I have about half the red and white blood cells of a normal person and no platelets. That means no strength, no immunity to infection, and no ability to clot my blood. Things like running, weight lifting, squats etc.....are not even mentioned in my post for a very good reason......not only are they things I absolutely should NOT be doing; they're things I HATE doing and simply won't do. Period.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. Here is the question. Has anyone hear tried using a hula hoop to assist with burning off some calories? And did it help or not?

    Thanks in advance.

This is an extremely kind thing to say. I tried to rep you for this John, but it wouldn't let me so I must have recently. Thanks very much for such nice words.

Weedy I think if you feel like hula hooping at all, you are ahead of the game.

Personally, I am amazed you feel good enough to attempt hula hooping.

I haven't done any hula hooping since 72 or so, but from what I remember it was pretty strenuous exercise. It should help you a lot. Don't overdo anything right now, you are too important to everyone!

    Lots of love, Lola

And Max.....I know you're completely right about the calories in/calories out.....many more go in at my house than out. That's definitely part of the issue.

But during winter I want something I can do inside that's fairly fun. It' doesn't have to be a fierce calorie burner.....just some exercise and some fun.

Hi Lola, thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, I did all that hooping as a kid too......exercise was easy back in those days. Youth being wasted on the young........
