    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

It's gotta be good for about all areas of the body and when you become fast cardio would be obtained. Dancing keeps one fit and it is like dancing in a way.

BTW, May I have the next dance Miss Weedhound?

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

Go golfing, DO NOT buy a golf cart...walk the course on a nice day and just enjoy your game. I have gotten pretty tired from a long day of golf believe it or not. Its a good hobby, and is FUN, and most importantly it is not that intense of a sport so you should be fine. I'm sorry to hear about your cancer man, thats so terrible. BUT on the bright side, you have fought and won and are even willing to exercise right afterwards so you are doing excellent man . Either get that or try the WII fit :rastasmoke:.

Yeah, I did all that hooping as a kid too......exercise was easy back in those days. Youth being wasted on the young........[/quote]

    Dear Ms., (female,) lady, Weedhound.

    You asked.

Is a hula hoop good exercise?

Not usually, but it depends on time and ferocity, ya?

To feel exercised without stress, I've used one of those 3' diameter mini-trampolines.

Gets yer lymphatic fluids movin' and makes ya feel mo' betta.
Prolly won't shed any pounds but Inokea, it's almost as much fun as jumping on da bed.

It's also fun to crank up the rock-n-roll and dance yer ass off.
    Hoop or no hoop.

    Side question.
Did they offer you Hematocrit and/or Iron supplements?

    Aloha nui loa.

    Drat! The dreaded double post.

Glue sand to the inside of the hoop and reduce your waistline, eventually!

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

I understand the whole weakness thing with the Chemo.....

You can do bodyweight squats and all of those other exercises.

Working with your own body weight is the safest way to exercise, try doing some push ups, if you cannot do a regular one, go on your knees and do as many as you can, then work your way up to a regular push up.

For another exercise that you can do safely at home that's not too strenuous on your body, try going down into a squatting position, and lift something that you feel you can safely and not too strenuously over your head, and stand up, keeping your back straight, this will work much of your core musculature and also your back, shoulders and legs.

You can start at a pace that's right for you, and it's safe and easy. When you're watching tv or folding laundry, during a commercial take the basket above your head and do some squats.

Lifting things doesn't mean you've gotta be macho, it's just good for you to do anyways.

PM me for more ideas, because I've got experience helping other people in situations such as yourself. I had to help a friend of mine who was morbidly obese to the point where he couldn't move properly, with my diet and workout advice he safely lost a lot of weight, he's still overweight but doing much better last I'd checked.

Now for the reality check portion of this. The women in videos, or in magazines bust their ass for their bodies, they lift heavy weights and don't fuck around with the little pink ones. They're genetically gifted, but they also bust their ass. I have a feeling asking for workout advice in the women's section would bring you a lot of advice using the word "tone".

Of course muscle "tone" is the residual tension your muscles maintain constantly, it's genetic and cannot be helped. In their relaxed state your muscles retain tension so if put under sudden stress they're not damaged.

Specifying everything about your situation better helps me come up with ideas to help you improve your physical fitness and health.

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

Weedhound, one of my wife's physical therapists while she was doing rehab for her back told her doing the hula hoop is excellent for strengthening core muscles. Probably wouldn't count as aerobic exercise or weight training, but to strengthen up those core muscles that support your spine and abdomen, the PT said it was a good tool. I never could keep one of the things up, but you ladies have a shape and a waist that can. Mighty glad you're on this side of your chemo. Hope you get your strength back fast.

This is more of an aside to Image Reaper's comment about sex burning calories. Maybe I'm just strange, but watching a pretty lady do the hula hoop is a good form of foreplay.

    Hula Hoop=Exercise?

Hmmm....Weedy you may have started a trend here. Now that we know guys like to watch us Hula Hoop, it won't be long till the girls get off the pole and start hooping.

I can see it sweeping the strip clubs of the nation. The latest craze. Naked hula hoopers.

Max, thanks for all the input....thats a long, informative post but I'm afraid all you MEN out there are completely missing the question.....which was.....how about a hula hoop for exercise.....yay or nay? Amongst everything else I actually did get the shift that you guys thinks it's for wussies.....which I am so that sounds about right

Since I finished chemo a week ago I have about half the red and white blood cells of a normal person and no platelets. That means no strength, no immunity to infection, and no ability to clot my blood. Things like running, weight lifting, squats etc.....are not even mentioned in my post for a very good reason......not only are they things I absolutely should NOT be doing; they're things I HATE doing and simply won't do. Period.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. Here is the question. Has anyone hear tried using a hula hoop to assist with burning off some calories? And did it help or not?

    Thanks in advance.
But I did answer and it's exercise. For the healthy, it's perhaps nothing but it does burn some calories and it'd burn it aerobically. After chemo, anything kind of movement is beneficial towards losing weight. Start with doing it for 10 minutes, put on some of your favorite tunes and you'll have your share of exercise. Don't listen to the people who say "hula-hoop isn't exercise."

I especially know about your situation with chemo since I went through it myself. I suppose you got a bit of weight gain you wish to burn off? Start with the hula-hoop and take it easy, push yourself at a little, but not too hard, your body has to re-adjust.

I also suggest you look at pilates, do some light stretching. It'll help you feel better and open up your body. I'm sure some of those muscles are tightened. Just do what you can.
