do you need nutes?
You can use just H2o, just like they were outside. But it is like a snickers bar it would be good just the milk chocolate, but if you add some nuts it will help with some saltyness but wait you need somthing to hold it all together so you add some carmel and with all of that you have a snickers bar. Are you following me? Extra nutes make things bigger, and better.
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling.

can you live without food?
soil has some nutrients but these will disappear over time as the plant eats it all up

If you get a good quality potting soil they do fine without nutes. Its a good way to start at first just to get your feet wet, Then you can start going more indepth with nutes.

Plants need nutrients to survive, soil has nutrients to a certain degree
but as a child needs food to fully reach their potential, if you deprive the plant of anything it needs to fully achieve its genetic potential, you need to supplement some nutrients
I would recommend purchasing some nutrients just to add periodically
just add much less to be careful
