cutting fan leafs
I've read conflicting ideas on this. I find that many times I can simply bend or tuck the fan leaf behind a stem or another leaf and not have to remove it. This way light still gets to the bottom.

The experts at this site have said time and again that you should leave your leaves intact until they are dead and easily snap off. The reason for this is that the fan leaves store energy for the plant.
Just tuck/tie the leaves to expose bud sites. If you have a really big plant and want light to get to the bottom sites, you could mount some cfl's down towards the areas you want more light.
