Newbie thinks her plant has went to seed

    Hello.

I don't know much about growing, however... I think that my plant has went to seed. Does anyone know how I tell this? I have a bunch of flower looking things on the ends of most of my twigs (don't know what else to call them... the off shoots of my plant) and when I touch them a yellowy powder comes out. I've been growing this plant for a bout 5 months. It is starting to finally grow what I believe are buds. I have no florescent lights or anything... just using plain ol' sun. I am just wondering what I should do with the flowers... do I cut them off? They are NOT buds...

I would love it if you guys can help.

Are you sure it's not a male? Sounds like it but im still kinda new also. If so sorry to hear that. Seeing that you only have one plant.

Hon, in spite of what some folks will tell you, males can be smokable! It's just that they vary a lot in potency! Some are "sticky" and some are not.

In a wild situation, "sticky" males trap some of their own pollen, and so do not reproduce as well as a "non-sticky" male. They die out after a while. For females it pays off to be "sticky"- more pollen gets trapped and more seeds are fertilized. Wild cannabis self-selects for "sticky" females and "non-sticky" males.

However, we humans have been busy breeding for that lovely extra-sticky, extra-trichy, bud! This has affected the potency of the males, too. The percent of "sticky" males goes up- and now, it is selected for! So as we go along breeding our pot, we should be getting more and more potent, "sticky" males. With males, it's still a roll of the dice on how potent it will be. (Wonder if there will be a day when we breed strains in which the males and females are equally potent? )

I have seen some pics of very "sticky" males that look as good as most females! They are NOT usually as good as their sisters, but male can be quite acceptable as a smoke. Or it can be "hemp". No way of really telling until you try it.

Or you can make canna-butter with it. Or brownies. Green Dragon.

Or you can toss it. If you have other cannabis plants, you should get rid of it. Unless you want a HUGE number of seeds in your buds. You might consider saving a little pollen from it (do a search for "how to"), so you can fertilize a single bud on your next plant (hopefully a female) and have a nice supply of seeds for the future.

Thanks for the info, I had actually been thinking it was a female. Darn, guess it was the luck of the draw. I had first started with two plants and the one died, which would have been the female. I will have to try again, this time with a light.

Thanks for the all the help! This place is great!
