Sorry to hear about the bad news, but it sounds like a good lead on a new gig. Good luck with that. You are smart, talented and have a very wide ranging skill set, so you should do OK, whether it it this opportunity or something else.
It's interesting you mentioned an opportunity in sustainable food production, becasue I'm looking at doing something in sustainable food production myself. I heard about this guy in San Francisco who started a business in which he will go to a client's house and put in a backyard organic vegetable garden for them for a fee. Then he'll come back once a week to maintain and harvest for them, again for a fee. It's for people who want to HAVE a garden but don't want to BE a gardener, and for people who want to EAT homegrown food, but not GROW it themselves. He also has an agreement to collect excess harvests and sell it on sort of a CSA basis. I'm going to look into doing this kind of thing myself.
If this economy goes deeper into the dumper, a lot of us may need to look at making our own opportunities rather than looking for jobs. You are smart enough that I can see you making a good go at your own business of some kind.
Good luck, and keep us posted!

Haha Reap you ARE a dirty boy but that's why I love ya! And Steve, if I end up taking some time off, I have to say that a road trip down to a warmer climate isn't all that bad an idea!
I'm whipping up a portfolio of all of my technical writing that isn't NSFW... lololol... whcih equals approximately 2.9% of the technical writing I have done in the last decade!
You guys get the good stuff; work gets the dull stuff about checking alkalinity and turbidity of drinking water. I think you get the better deal.
Let's hope all these good wishes translate into walking into that interview just cocky enough to floor them! I feel so much more ready to face the HR people after reading all this.

keep your head up. you'll knock em dead!
the universe tends to unfold as it should. i see a new job in your future.
good luck, and i know i'm new 'round here, but i can't even start to thank you enough for all the information, knowledge and wisodom that you share....hell that you dedicated your life to!
you make this place much more like a home then a message board.
