My dream to live and grow outdoors :D
Hello all, I am new to this site. First off let me say I am 3 seasons into indoor growing, so I'm completely new to the process. I want to share with you my goal for 2010, in hopes that anyone may have constructive advice or possibly even experience with this.
I want to buy a small trailer, and live and grow outdoors in the 2010 season, so from about April to November here in California. I want to do this without electricity, or any other usual commodities. It will be just me and a dog, and I will hunt for my food. I know, a little funny then that I would want a trailer but that's more for a stable/safe shelter from weather and wildlife. Now I have been reading a lot lately, and it seems that the biggest complaint authorities have about growers like this is trash and destroying the forests ecosystem with different chemicals. I want to do this completely organically, preferably with existing soil. Organic growing along with hunting for my own food will minimize trash/damage done to the area, which makes me feel better and certainly wouldn't hurt my defense should it ever come to that.
I have been using Google maps to try and find a decent location for this, but it is kind of tough. [removed by admin] I think in the right spot, choppers may not matter too much but I'm wondering, does anyone know of areas that choppers don't come to much at all? There are areas in Northern California I have been looking at, about 50 miles from the nearest (small) town.
It'd be great if some one out on here has already done something similar to this, I'd love to hear from you. I'd appreciate any ideas on locations as well. Also I'd like to add I do not plan on doing this just for money. Honestly, I make plenty of money already, and live rather comfortably. I want to do this to really take a break from society, discover myself, and finish my second novel in that time as well.
One Love
If so I do apologize, and ask that the mod please edit those parts out.reffik Reviewed by reffik on . My dream to live and grow outdoors :D Hello all, I am new to this site. On these boards, I don't think you are supposed to discuss plans for commercial growing especially on a scale of 600-1000 plants and/or selling of the product, whether it is for profit or not.
If I am wrong then I do apologize. Otherwise good luck and stay SAFE.

That is true, and I've removed the bits.
It is also for your safety.
One thing- existing soil may need to be seriously amended before you use it. This is for an outdoor summer grow? Check the soil now, in fall, and add well rotted organic material to it so it has the winter to settle, or plan to bring in bagged compost in spring. Fall soil prep is more effective.

I'm already 'living in the NorCal woods in a trailer' ... I advise you don't try doing your growing at the same time ... you will be hassled, and run off, at the very least ... I know what I'm saying about that ... also, 'hunting your food' will likely bring about an encounter with a Game Warden, definitely a bad thing, they don't screw around ... regardless of where you go 'in the boonies', someone is there before you, and is likely to report a 'squatter' in their area (they didn't go there for companionship) ... remember, this is 2008, and you're not the first to dream this up ... otherwise, enjoy the camping as you can

Reffix: If you don't mind traveling, look at the Land Between the Lakes Section of western Kentucky. There's long term camping available, huntin' and fishin' is allowed. Basically everything for getting back to nature. It is located between the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers so you are surrounded by water and giant man made lakes on either side of 1000s of acres of nearly deserted woods, meadows creeks etc. Bring lots of Off!
Right now is deer season, and there 's an UNLIMITED anterless deer hunting. Kill as many of them gals as you can says Dept of KY. Then there's lots of fish, squirrels, possums, birds, groundhogs and raccoons, all of which are tasty.
Have fun.

keep in mind, after he shoots his deer, he has no place to store it (travel trailers don't come equipped with meat lockers, or even decent refrigerators) ... not to nit-pick, just illustrating the thousands of things you don't think about, until you're faced with it ... like the last coupla days, I laid on the floor, puking for 48 hours straight into my wastepaper basket ... no help around, too sick to drive, etc... that is when reality strikes

Poor reaper, I hate to hear you've been sick. Hope you get to feelin better soon. Come park at my place and I will take care of you. Maybe Dutch will invite us over for a visit.
But anyway, just hang the deer in a tree. It's cold enough here to keep till spring. That's why I mentioned other edibles. There's always some season in to hunt. First birds, then deer, etc,. There's always something in season and everybody is shooting all the time around here. Nobody cares.

well, thank you for the kind offer, Lola
... I'm better now, it comes and goes ... I don't meant to spoil anyone's dream, just wanted to point out that it's no treat, living off-grid ... however, a lot of the hardships are a result of age, and health ... doing this when I was 20, was a helluva lot easier than it is now
... I wish the guy luck, and satisfaction

Reaper: My house burned down and I lived in a tent for a year. I know it's rough, roughing it.
Good idea though to point out the flaws in camper living. If you ain't done it, it is surprising how little one thinks of flaws in plan till they are stuck in wilderness! Enjoyed your travel pics..
Reffix: Sorry to hi jack your thread...have fun in the wilderness. Take a 45/70 along!

You can not live on hunted meat alone, you should can some fruits and veggatables, and bring seed for a small garden-perhaps a goat in case things get hard(goats live on anything-taste good-quality alarm-feces and blood=fertalizer-plus they are Kosher!). Medicine, salt to preserve meat(50kg or more), camp a distance from your gardens. Is california not a densly populated state of the US? Perhaps New Mexico, Arizona, or Oklahoma looks less dense. There are large empty forests there. Also a crazy excuse; like working for an University, obscure Goverment agency, timber cruising, something that will take time and effort to confirm/deny, for when somebody in uniform comes- remember lots of technical bull, be able to carry on with someone who knows their stuff, carry scientifc crap- tables, obscure mesurment devices, ect. This may not get them to forget you, but it will give you time to LEAVE. May you and your plants live in peace.
