I rent, so cutting a hole in their door wasn't an option. But I lucked out and found a "damaged" (small scratch that a bit of paint & putty covered) door that was the same size at the local builder supply for $10! The old closet door is taken off and I get my new door ready.

1) I drilled a 3 inch hole through the door to fit a small fan I already had. The hole is about 6' 2" from the bottom of the door.

2) I got a thin piece of wood that was about 4 x 18 and some contrasting wood trim that was about 1 inch thick. I cut the trim so the 2 long pieces were 18 inches and the end pieces were about 7 inches (to hide the cut ends of the long pieces).

3) I then split one of the long pieces of trim so it was about as thick as the 4 x 18 board.

4) I assembled the pieces to make a very shallow box with one side much lower than the other 3. From the front (the bottom of the box) you can't tell that there is a vent on top (unless you are about 6'9" tall, lol). The split trim side forms the top of the coat rack- and the vent to your closet.

5) I added some brass coat hooks, varnished it and hung it over the hole. The fan got mounted on the other side with some foam rubber padding between it and the door to lessen vibration. Air is exhausted upwards through the hidden vent.

It looks like a kid's wood-shop project being proudly displayed by Mom! Get a GOOD fan- mine is cheap and you can still hear it hum , but otherwise, it works OK.
