Phosphoric or sulfuric acid are preferable to nitric or hydrochloric acid. Phosphoric is best.
Do not use baking soda. Plus, pH range for hydro should be centered at 5.8-6.2.

Next time you use a medium, soak it in clean p.h. water at 5.0. It should balance your medium out to be around 5.5-5.8.
