Marijuana contains an amazing chemical, beta-caryophyllene, and scientists have thoroughly proven that it could be used to treat pain, inflammation, atherosclerosis, and osteoporosis.

Jürg Gertsch, of ETH Zürich, and his collaborators from three other universities learned that the natural molecule can activate a protein called cannabinoid receptor type 2. When that biological button is pushed, it soothes the immune system, increases bone mass, and blocks pain signals -- without causing euphoria or interfering with the central nervous system.

Gertsch and his team published their findings on June 23 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.They focused on the anti-inflammatory properties of the impressive substance -- testing it on immune cells called monocytes and also in mice.

Since beta-caryophyllene seems to be powerful, occurs naturally in many foods, and does not get people high, it could turn out to be a nearly ideal medication. The organic compound is also phenomenally cheap. Sigma Aldrich sells it, in kosher form, for forty-two dollars per kilogram.

Unfortunately, big pharmaceutical companies tend not to seek FDA approval for natural chemicals, and most doctors are reluctant to prescribe drugs that have not received a green light from the regulatory agency. Thus, it would require a heroic effort by academic researchers to prove that beta-caryophyllene is safe and effective in humans.

Perhaps, before that happens, the natural substance will find its way into the herbal medicine aisle of health food stores.





my comments: SO basicly we just learned that cannabis is A+ for the immune system, so if you have a common cold then it would be smart to smoke pot.

it also increases bone mass seeing how it could be a good treatment for broken bones, arthritis, weak bones, and other realted bone health issues.

it also blocks pain signals -- without causing euphoria or interfering with the central nervous system. so wow isnt this new proof amazing?
just a couple more reasons to respect and fight for the future of our blessed miracle plant.

I was also thinking and wanted to make note of that beta-caryophyllene when smoked heat may damage it and render its potency and effect. The best way to consume beta-caryophyllene would probrobly be by drinking a tea made from cannabis or eating food with cannabis cooked or baked into it.

France discovered this, in the 70's. It must've been part of the information that our government has suppressed. I'm not sure if they knew what beta-caryophyllene does to us.

Regenerating pieces of planarian worms are able to absorbe insoluble substances deposited on the base of the vessels in which they are cultivated. This biological test was used to study the toxic effects of the essential oil of Cannabis sativa L. The hydrocarbons such as pinene (alpha and beta), caryophyllene and so on were not toxic. On the contrary caryophyllene oxide was highly toxic. It was not possible to detect any protection by 5-hydroxytryptamine as it was the case against delta 1-tétrahydro-cannabinol and cannabidiol.

Thanks AIR for bringing the truth out about the many healthful attributes of Cannabis . I firmly believe that our government wants marijuana kept as a schedule 1 drug and wants to supress any good that comes from the cannabis plant. Our federal government has continud to stand against the will of the people concering the use of marijuana, and for what? Why does the federal government want cannabis kept illegal? There are as many speculations on this point as there are different strains of cannabis. The most common belief as to why the U.S. wants cannabis kept illegal is money. NOT for health reasons, NOT for a better world for our children, and certainly NOT for better healthcare. Ever since the DEA's Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young stated in 1986 that, "Marijuana, in its naturally form, is one of the safest most theraputically active substances known. It would be arbitrary, unreasonable and capricious for the DEA to coninue to stand between those sufferer's and the benefits of the substance" the DEA has continued to lie and propagandize the dangers of marijuana even more. They even went to the U.S. Supreme Court to prove that the DEA does not have to follow the advice of the ALJ. What kind of sense is this? It is very clear that the U.S. Government wants cannabis out of the medical scene for all the wrong reasons. Please add your thoughts as to why you think the U.S. Government is anti-marijuana. I, and millions of other people, are being denied, or sent to prison for using the only medicine that helps fight off our pain, nausea, etc. Again why do you think the U.S. Government wants Marijuana kept illegle?

I think that it's illegal because they are afraid of it. They being the people who don't know that cannabinoid receptors exist, don't know that they regulate every process in our bodies, and don't know that they are one of the most numerous in our nervous systems.
