T5 distance?
I have wanted to do a targeted-wavelength T5HO grow and use an icecap ballast to rock 356w T5HO in a 4 tube 4 foot unit. I have a feeling for fluorescent growing that this would be the way to go, given that the peak range for each phosphor is wider than the typical narrow emission band of LED, and thus it would cover supposed 'support wavelengths' as well. Also, I would like to see narrower tubes, T4 or T3.

T5 distance?
Mine have now seemed to have adjusted to the light. I have it around 2"-3" inches and raise it a couple clicks a couple of times during the day. The temps have been ranging between 70 and 78 degrees depending on how far I open the closet door. The ladies are lovin' it!!!

damn me and my negativity. the question is the same across the board for lighting. you keep it as close as you can without damaging your plants.

Distance v damage? That may not be totally true since some are relating distance to wavelength and modding for more wattage. But, me, I just wanted a consensus and some illustration which some have posted as to what they were doing. I've answered it for myself at this point with the system I have.
