Inside Lighting

I'm new here & i grew some very nice stuff outside this year & i guess it got around and i got ripped off as usually.So i have a growing light & my babies r starting to rise now but it's been so long since i used inside equipment i can't remember how far the light shoud be from the plant when there babies.I don't won't to burn them up and i don't won't to be to far away to make them long and weak.So does anyone here have any info on about the right height to start them out?There already about 2 inches tall,and i ony use female seeds so,i'l be cloning later down the road.I went on internet and didnt see alot help on this mater.I'm using the 400 watt horilux lighting which i wish i'd bought the 600 watt or the 1000.I can't remember if i can grow 5 with this light or 8 so any help would be most appreciated!
